James Gunn is launching his new DCU in 2024, but what films and shows does he plan to release within the next few years? Here are the ones we know about.
The DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters is set to begin in 2024. This soft reboot of the DCEU is created by James Gunn (co-CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios). Here are all the upcoming releases that have been revealed so far:
MOVIES
1) Joker: Folie á Deux
Release Date: October 4, 2024; Director: Todd Phillips; Budget: $150 million
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix (Arthur Fleck/The Joker), Lady Gaga (Harley Quinn) and Zazie Beetz (Sophie Dumond).
Premise: A musical thriller sequel to the 2019 Joker film. Arthur Fleck, now the Joker, is taken to Arkham State Hospital after murdering Murray Frank live on TV. Here, he meets Dr. Harleen Quinzel, and the two fall madly in love. While District Attorney Harvey Dent builds up a case against Arthur for his actions, Harleen takes action to save her new partner in crime.
2) Superman: Legacy
Release Date: July 11, 2025; Director: James Gunn
Starring: David Corenswet (Clark Kent), Rachel Brosnahan (Louis Lane) and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor).
Premise: Clark Kent, aka Superman, seeks to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.
3) The Batman Part II
Release Date: October 3, 2025; Director: Matt Reeves
Starring: Robert Pattinson (Batman), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon) and Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth)
Premise: The sequel to the 2022 film The Batman.
4) Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Release Date: TBC
Premise: Follow the darker origin of Kara Zor-El before she finally comes to Earth.
5) The Brave and the Bold
Release Date: TBC; Director: Andrés Muschietti
Premise: This film will focus on the father-son dynamics of Batman and Robin.
6) Swamp Thing
Release Date: TBC; Director: Camp Argyll

TV SHOWS
DC’s TV shows are currently set to be released on Max (HBO).
1) The Penguin
Release Date: 2024; Director: Craig Zobel
Starring: Colin Farrell (Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin) and Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone).
Premise: A crime drama series spin-off from the film The Batman (2022). The series will explore Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham. There will be eight episodes.
2) Creature Commandos
Release Date: 2024; Director: James Gunn
Starring: Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Jr.), Maria Bakalova (Princess Ilana Rostovic), Indira Varma (Bride of Frankenstein), Zoë Chao (Nina Mazursky), Alan Tudyk (Doctor Phosphorus), David Harbour (Eric Frankenstein), Sean Gunn (G. I. Robot and Weasel), Steve Agee (John Economos) and Viola Davis (Amand Waller).
Premise: Based on the comic series of the same name. Amanda Waller assembles a Black Ops team of monsters, aka the Creature Commandos. The first season will contain 7 episodes.
3) Waller
Release Date: 2024
Starring: Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Danielle Brooks (Adebayo), and Steve Agee (John Economos).
4) Booster Gold
Release Date: TBC
Premise: A TV series based on the DC superhero of the same name.
5) Paradise Lost
Release Date: TBC
Premise: A web TV series based on the DC race the Amazons.
6) Lanterns
Release Date: TBC
Premise: A sci-fi superhero series based on the Green Lantern Corps. The film follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they watch over Earth and investigate a terrifying mystery.
7) Arkham Asylum
Release Date: TBC
Premise: A spin-off from The Batman 2022, estimated to have 8 episodes, centred around Arkham State Hospital (Arkham Asylum’s new name, as per The Batman 2022).
