James Gunn is on the hunt for the new Supergirl to appear in his DCU. He has whittled it down to two choices, but which actor will come out on top?
The DC Universe reboot has officially begun in 2024. Some of the actors had already been cast to play in the major upcoming roles last year – David Corenswat as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luther. Now, Supergirl has two strong contenders.
The competition to player Superman’s Kryptonian cousin has come down to Milly Alcock or Meg Donnelly. Earlier this week, both actors participated in screen tests in Atlanta, Georgia. James Gunn and Peter Safran were in attendance.
Alcock gained fame in her role as a young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel/spin-off “House of the Dragon”. Donnelly already has a connection to DC, famously voicing the superhero in various animated series over the years. Her most recent appearance was “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One”.
With the resolution of both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, DC’s decision-makers can supercharge putting the new universe into motion. Fans may be wondering why the decision has been made to recast Sasha Calle, who appeared in 2023’s “The Flash”. According to Gunn, Sasha’s take on Supergirl just doesn’t align with his new DC universe.
It is expected that Supergirl will make an appearance in “Superman: Legacy” before headlining her own movie “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. “Woman of Tomorrow” will likely take inspiration from the recent comic book series of the same name, written by Tom King.
We don’t know much about the film, though James Gunn has revealed some information. It has been described as a “standalone feature” with a new take on Supergirl as “a much more jaded character”.
