The Nintendo Switch will be 7 years old in March 2024, and there are now rumours about the console’s successor, the Nintendo Switch 2. Given its age, the Nintendo Switch is due an upgrade to keep up with its competitors (primarily PlayStation and Xbox).
Over 3000 developers filled in the 2024 State of the Industry survey for the Game Developers Conference, with 8% (240 developers) claiming that they were already working on games for the Switch 2 (a nickname given by fans).
If true, many of these developers will be working on the same titles and most appear to be Western rather than Japanese developers. The survey covered many topics, including a question about what format interested developers the most – with the Switch 2 placing third.
Nintendo has made no official announcements about the Switch 2, let alone any mention of game developments. In fact, the company issued a blanket denial to address reports of a March 2024 launch. Nintendo also denied sharing Switch 2 hardware capability details with major publishers during Gamescom 2022 in Cologne.
Those who are in the know about the console will have signed strict NDAs, meaning that it’s unlikely we will hear any major news (until Nintendo makes a reveal). A new Nintendo Direct has been predicted for early 2024, though it will likely focus on the current Switch.
