Sega Atlus Rumoured to Be Developing Games for Netflix

Atlus, a Sega subsidiary and Persona developer, is rumoured to be making video games for Netflix. The streamer recently branched out into gaming.

Atlus (Shin Megami Tensai, Persona) is rumoured to be developing games for Netflix’s recent gaming platform. After Sega revealed that Atlus might release its games on other platforms as part of a “global expansion,” everyone began to speculate. This news was divisive among fans. Some view Atlus as a sellout. Others hope that it will cast more light on Persona Five: The Phantom X and lead to the removal of the unpopular gacha elements.

Gacha games include in-game purchases in exchange for a random in-game item – similar to paid loot boxes. The name is derived from Japanese vending machines, known as Gachapon, that dispense plastic capsules containing toys – which make a satisfying sound when used.

These types of video games have been heavily criticised, often compared to gambling – as players are encouraged to spend real money without knowing what they will get in return. Typically, the odds are majorly stacked against them. Games such as Genshin Impact and RAID: Shadow Legends fall under this category.

It is unclear whether Netflix would remove the gacha aspects P5X; they are searching for ways to financially benefit from the recent popularity of their gaming platform – thanks to them re-releasing GTA on mobile. Other ways that Netflix might monetise its platform is through ads or in-game premium content.

Netflix’s games library currently includes a variety of game genres: shooters, RPGs, Puzzles, Fantasy, Mystery, and more. Oxenfree II, Dead Cells, 12 Minutes, and Storyteller appear on the roster alongside several Stranger Things games. Will this partnership with Sega and Atlus lead them to victory?
