Netflix Doubles Down on Avatar: The Last Airbender Live Action

Netflix has adapted Avatar: The Last Airbender into a live-action series. After a successful season one, the streamer has renewed the show for two new series.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is a beloved animated series. It was only a matter of time before one of the big streamers made a life action version – aka Netflix. The series has received some criticism, but that has not stopped Netflix from renewing the Nickelodeon adaptation for two more series.

Since its 22nd February 2024 debut, the series has reportedly reached over 40 million views and has been Netflix’s top English-language TV show. There is no official episode number for the future seasons, though Season 1 contained 8 episodes. Emily in Paris and Stranger Things have also earned a double-season renewal.

The story follows Aang (Gordon Cormier), the young Avatar, as he learns to master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, and Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the Fire Nation.

“The Last Airbender” also stars Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao, Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Kiawentriio as Katara, and Ian Ousley as Sokka.

While the Netflix show has not been as popular as the original animated series, it has clearly been an overall success in Netflix’s eyes. Will it be able to maintain the audience numbers, or will it succumb to the cursed legacy of most live adaptations?
