Microsoft and AI Gaming: The Future of the Gaming Industry

Many gaming companies are jumping on the AI bandwagon, and this includes Microsoft. The company is searching for AI experts to help implement this controversial technology into its future games. Is AI gaming the future of the gaming industry?

Microsoft recently posted a job advertisement for a “Senior Director, Applied Sciences, Gaming AI”. The description is as follows: This role will manage a team of applied & data scientists developing new deep learning and foundation models to support gaming needs. The role will connect with teams across game studios and platform services, co-creating opportunities for new player experiences with developments in AI and Machine Learning, to bring to life the next generation of platform and game experiences.

Given Microsoft’s recent focus on “new player experiences,” they may aim to create AI-powered NPCs, including the real-time generation of content. From the job description, it seems that Microsoft’s recent acquisition, Activision Blizzard, will be included in this AI-driven plan.

Companies across many industries are pushing hard to use AI to increase content output and profits, but will this approach work? For gaming, there are several main pros and cons.

With AI, you could have a more tailored experience, allowing you to make an endless amount of choices. The replayability value for these types of games would be immense. In theory, games could be produced much faster, while also removing human error.

Although, what will the quality of these games be like? Currently, AI generated content lacks the creativity required to make a compelling narrative. With infinite choices, games may feel lackluster and surface level – it is much harder to create a rounded experience without some limitations. NPCs may act in strange ways, for example out of character dialogue or behaviours. The gaming industry is already plagued by bugs and glitches; infinite outcomes may create even more immersion breaking issues. Worst of all, many employees will lose their jobs.

Is there a good way to implement AI gaming? AI is a great tool for creative work, when paired up with human thinking and refinement. It can provide a solid base for developers, streamlining mundane processes. In this way, developers can focus on the creativity and innovation of their games, offering the best experience for their fanbase.
