Ultron could be making a return to the Marvel universe, based on references made in the comics. How would the brave superheroes deal with his reincarnation?
Ultron is an evil AI within the MCU, possessing a murderous drive to replace all organic life with robots and androids. With the release of Avengers Inc. #5 written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Leonard Kirk, Ultron makes his return in a surprising new form.
Avengers Inc. #5 picks up with the supposed reintroduction of Ultron in the form of the new Vic Shade. This doesn’t turn out to be true, but it was implied in the previous book. Additionally, Avengers Twilight #2 teased the appearance of Ultron.
As seen in Avengers Inc., Pym is recruiting new low-level villains into a new Lethal Legion to track down the remnants of Ultron. Vic Shade rendered him unconscious in #4. Ultron’s code hides in Pym’s psyche, waiting to be reactivated by bits of the AI’s code planted in the Lethal Legion. Vic knows about Ultron’s plans, as he is an Ultron himself – Ultron MK. 12 (Mark for short). This Ultron developed the capacity for good, and allied himself with the West Coast Avengers.
In the end, Pym manages to redirect control of his systems to Mark, who shuts his fellow Ultrons down and ends the threat. He sends his AI consciousness into a new body, leaving Whirlwind to return to consciousness in his own body, joining the Lethal Legion. Mark vows to fight alongside the Avengers if Ultron ever returns.
Avengers: Twilight #2 is written by Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Baniel Acuña. An elderly Steven Rodgers returns to action only to realise that the world isn’t ready for him. Kyle Jarvis, current CEO of Stark Enterprises, convinces Tony’s son – James Stark – to don a new version of his father’s armour. Jarvis wants him to oppose the return of Captain America. Jarvis is actually the Red Skull in disguise and he has Ultron’s AI code stored in a special computer.
Could it be a coincidence that Ultron appears in two Avenger-centric comic issues? It seems that Marvel has a larger Ultron story in mind.
